Welcome to the Rio Linda HS Science Department – the most successful Science department at Twin Rivers USD!

Our department offers a wide range of courses, which are definitely helping our students to be technical / science proficient in their post-high school life. (please, see student’s video testimonials)

The list of science courses offered by our school is the largest in the District and includes:

1.  Earth Science (not everyone will be a scientist but every person lives on our planet!) – the course covers introductory geology, weather, astronomy and other topics connected with our planet. Most of the students enrolled in this course are freshmen.

 Teaching this course are:

Ms.Graf: (UCSB graduate with Geology major and an emphasis in Science Education.  Geo-Science Credential from CSU Sacramento, RLHS Teacher of the Year 2008, and 2014, taught for 10 years at RLHS)

Ms. Miller(CSU Chico graduate with Geoscience major, teaching since 2000, has clear credentials in Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry and Math.  She is a USAF veteran and has worked as a meteorologist and an onsite oil well geology technician.)

Mrs.Elbert: (Sac State graduate with emphasis in Computer Science and Human Development.  Credentials in Biological Sciences, Geological Sciences, and Space Science.  Teaching since the year 2000 in Sacramento and Santa Cruz areas.)

Mr. Baier: (Sac State graduate with a Bachelor of science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.  Master's of science in curriculum and instruction in Western Governors University. Credentials in Biology and Earth Science.  Teaching for 10 years in this district.)

2.  Biology: The course includes a Lab component.  Prerequisite to this class is passing Algebra 1 with C or above. The majority of our students in Biology classes are freshmen and sophomores.

Teaching this course are:

Mr. Cervantes: (UC Santa Cruz Graduate with BS in Biology, teaching since 2000.  Eight plus years of health field experience.)

Mr.Rogers: (UC Davis graduate with Biology major with emphasis in medical microbiology, completed his MEd.  Teaching at Rio Linda since 2011.  He holds clear credentials in Earth Science and Biology.)

Mr. Hicks: (He is credentialed in the Life Sciences, Agriculture and Geography, CLAD certified and "Highly Qualified/NCLB compliant")

Mrs.Elbert: (Sac State graduate with emphasis in Computer Science and Human Development.  Credentials in Biological Sciences, Geological Sciences, and Space Science.  Teaching since the year 2000 in Sacramento and Santa Cruz areas.)

3.  Chemistry:  Prerequisites are Algebra 1 and Biology with C or above. The course includes an extensive college level lab component. It is highly recommended to all college bound students; Most of our Chemistry students are sophomores and juniors.

Teaching this course are:

Ms.Bressler (High School Valedictorian; Attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), class of 2000; B.S. Chemical Engineering; Teaching credentials in math and chemistry)

Ms.Miller (CSU Chico graduate with Geoscience major, teaching since 2000, has clear credentials in Geoscience, Physics, Chemistry and Math.  She is a USAF veteran and has worked as a meteorologist and an onsite oil well geology technician.)

4.  Physics: It is a mathematically challenging course which includes Mechanics, Thermodynamics and Electromagnetism. Prerequisites: Geometry with C or above.

Teaching this course is:

Dr.Gavrilov (Leningrad Institute of Technology with major in Radiation Chemistry, PhD in Physics, more than 20 years of Physics research experience, teaching since 1994, possesses Eminence Clear Credentials in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, RLHS Teacher of the year 2009)

5. Anatomy and Physiology: Recommended to students planning their carrier in medical fields and also to students taking an AP Biology course.

Teaching this course is:

Mr.Cervantes (UC Santa Cruz Graduate with BS in Biology, teaching since 2000.  Eight plus years of health field experience.)

6.  Introduction to Astrophysics: the course helps student to understand the processes of evolution of the Universe and includes basics of star and planet formation and evolution, it also includes some ideas of cosmology, etc. Prerequisites: completing Geometry and Chemistry with a C or above.

Our Science Department offers an array of AP courses – the most successful and complete in the District.

Our AP Courses include:

  1. AP Biology (Mr. Rogers); Prerequisites: Algebra 1 and Biology with C or above.
  2. AP Chemistry (Dr.Gavrilov): Prerequisites: Algebra 2 and regular Chemistry (or teacher recommendation). For most students it is a second year Chemistry course.
  3. AP Physics 1&2 (Dr.Gavrilov): Prerequisites: Geometry with elements of Trig with C or above. This is a non-calculus college level course which includes the major topics of Physics such as Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Electricity and Magnetism, Waves, Optics, and elements of Quantum and Nuclear Physics.
  4. AP Physics C (Dr.Gavrilov): Prerequisite: AP Physics 1&2 and Calculus (can be taken concurrently).  This is a calculus based course covering Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism.

We teach our students good Science! Please check out a Power point presentation about our Department and testimonials from our alumni
