Integrated Math vs. Traditional Courses

Parents/Guardians,

Rio Linda High School, along with many other high schools in the Sacramento area, recently switched from a traditional pathway of math courses to an integrated pathway.  On the Traditional Pathway, students take Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.  On the Integrated Pathway, students will now take Integrated Math 1, Integrated Math 2, and Integrated Math 3.  The topics covered in the three courses do not change dramatically, but the order of coverage is modified.  

  • Integrated Math 1 covers some of the ideas typically covered in Algebra 1 and also some of the ideas typically taught in Geometry.
  • Integrated Math 2 covers the rest of the Algebra 1 and Geometry topics.
  • Integrated Math 3 aligns closely to the topics typically taught in Algebra 2.  
  • Students will have the opportunity to continue on to PreCalculus after taking Integrated Math 3.

The intention behind the switch is to create a more cohesive flow of ideas to support successful student learning.  At the same time, we will continue implementing updated Common Core standards and teaching strategies to include more hands-on, real life, exploratory learning.  Our recent textbook adoption allows us the opportunity to work on project-based learning and cooperative teams.  In addition to the math content standards, we want RLHS students to leave our program with strong problem-solving skills, the ability to explain their thought process and the skills required to work well with others.
